Drive Review

Drive has drivin me insane

Let me tell I hate anyone who says games and/or movies affects social behavior, people who say if games weren’t violent kids would not be violent either. Its complete garbage, I mean if that was true explain the previous violence before movies and games. So it is with a heavy heart I say the following “after watching Drive I want to steal a car and beat someone with a bat” I know it’s horrible. But it’s true I do it fills me with the same feeling I had after playing Grand Theft Auto 3 for the first time, The I wish I was a BAD ASS feeling. Now of course I am not going to do any of that but this movie much like the games GTA or Driver make me dream the dream of being a total BAD ASS which I say is damn good dream to dream.

Ryan Gosling plays the Driver or kid as he is called by his friend Shannon played by the great Bryan Cranston. Who does a superb low life cripple in this movie, I know the low life cripple role has become a common role these days. But I tell you here and now that while Shannon is not in the movie much it is the best low life cripple performance since Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy.  Carey Mulligan plays Irene the love interest of the Driver I would love to dissect her performance for you but there is not much to speak of really, she has few lines and looks wooden most of the time. The real female lead belongs to Christina Hendricks she has one tenth the screen time of Mulligan but puts a lot more into her performance, I also have to give her props for not being scared to go ugly. I think Hendricks is the hottest woman in Hollywood, so it was odd at first seeing her so damn ugly it’s a little jarring to be honest but it works on every level. Ron Perlman is here too playing Nino he’s connected to the mob somehow but not high up on the chain, has usual Ron is Ron excellent. Playing his crime partner is the greatest comedic mind of the 20th century Albert Brooks. Yes the man who gave us Mother and Modern Romance is playing the main heavy, and any movie fan knows a BAD ASS is only as good has his heavy. Well Albert delivers he plays Bernie Rose not as a nut job killer but as the genius business man who know sometimes you have to kill. He does not want to kill anyone or even hurt them, you skim his profit he won’t even mention it as long has it is not hurting him. His outlook is everyone has to eat, the only reason he is even the heavy in this film is because his partner is a moron. I am making it sound like Bernie Rose is a softie he is not make no mistake Bernie would walk up to his mother and end her life without blinking if he had to. It’s just he doesn’t see the point in creating all the trouble that goes along with the violence unless he has no choice.

Which brings me back to Ryan Gosling the person who leaves him no choice, Gosling says less than 10 lines the whole movie. He walks around in the gayest jacket ever seen on film, and helps the husband of the girl he is in love with stay alive and out of jail. All of it would make you think huge loser but somehow the director Nicolas Winding Refn and Gosling make this man the best BAD ASS on film this year maybe top 5 of all time. So why I am not talking about plot well I hardly ever do and in a movie with so little dialog I think it would hurt going in knowing too much about the movie. I don’t even want to tell you the Drivers job because finding out was a lot of fun for me, I think it will be for you too so go see this movie
