I am not a fan of Twilight so I thought it best to let a true TwiHard do the review for Breaking Dawn, so lets find out if Breaking Dawn broke Carol's heart.
Going into this movie I was nervous. I LOVE Twilight. Yes I am a “Twihard”. So I was scared to see how the movie would go from print to screen. Would they stay true to the book? Would Bella (Kristen Stewart) emote the emotion she had in the book? Would they give me Stephanie Meyar’s missing love scene? Would I finally understand what imprinting looked like? Would the birth scene relate to what was in my mind? So many questions and, for the most part this movie delivered.
You start off the movie with Jacob running out of his house wild with anger into the woods. He phases into a wolf and the scene cuts to his father Billy Black yelling out for him. Down on the ground is Edward and Bella’s wedding invitation. Then you see Bella’s dad Charlie just gazing at the invitation with confusement and it then cuts to Bella’s mom gleaming with happiness from it. This sets the tone. It’s here, the wedding. Some people are over joyed by the thought of it, others confused and some just plain pissed.
The ball is rolling. I felt the anticipation of the wedding. Like I was about to see a sister get married. Bella is a character I have followed for so long and her big day was finally here. The wedding is visually stunning. Everything you would have wanted from it or what you could have created in your mind from reading the book. The moments between Bella and her father Charlie (Billy Burke) seem genuine. Like a real father and daughter. You get to see and understand how much Charlie really loves Bella.
For the run time of 117 minutes they fit a lot in. A wedding, a honeymoon, a baby and a transformation. One of my favorite scenes is when Bella and Edward arrive at Isle Esme for their honeymoon and Edward asks for Bella to join him in a swim and Bella replies with, “I could use a few human minutes”. This is the most relatable we have ever seen Bella in my opinion. She’s nervous, confused, overwhelmed and frustrated. She’s about to finally be with the love of her life for the very first time and she has no idea how or where to even start to make that happen. I loved watching her being real, searching for the right outfit, brushing her teeth, and giving herself a pep talk in the mirror.
The acting in this movie has really progressed from the prior 3 movies. Bella doesn’t sound as constipated in this movie (yeah, you know what I’m talking about), Edward is not just relying on his mesmerizing stare and Jacob is no longer a little kid fighting for Bella’s heart. All the characters themselves have progressed so much.
Jacob (Taylor Lautner) has grown so much in this movie. He finally finds himself and becomes who he was always meant to be. We get to see him in a much different light and it’s very refreshing.
I loved how they dealt with the whole birth. Seeing Bella pregnant and actually giving birth, whoa. It’s fairly graphic for the PG-13 rating. Bill Condon does a great job relating the book to the movie. You get everything that you could have wanted.
Yes the movie has it’s downfalls, there are some corny moments with the wolf pack and within the birth scene itself but ya know what? It’s Twilight. It’s sparkly Volvo driving vampires and shirtless men who transform into giant wolves. You expect, and tolerate the cheese. The important part is, the movie was adapted very well from the book. Bella emoted. I got my missing love scene. I now know what imprinting looks like (dealt with very well BTW). And the birth scene was just as emotional in the movie as it was in the book. I laughed, I got emotional and at the end of the movie I can say I was happy.
