Early Bird Special

The early bird special Is back on the menu, and its going like hot cakes! So you better get it while its hot

Good day and welcome to another edition of the Early Bird Special, where we give you the real deal and none of the bull-stuffing. As always we narrowed it down to the top 6 and chunking them at your faces in order from least to BEAST!

6th place-Venom # 12

I know I've been telling people to keep an open mind to this whole Flash/Venom thing and I have not refrained from my statement. I still have faith that Remender will give us something worthwhile and turn Mr. Hail Mary into an actual power player. The book picked up from the last issue where they finally arrived to Vegas and Flash had a mission to retrieve some important cargo, but what Jack o lantern left out was that the cargo was non other than toxin yet another unstable symbiote and in a weird way it causes venom to snap and take the drivers seat in an attempt to kill toxin once and for all.

Overall the pacing was good, the plot was solid, and the art was unimpressive and the story boarding was bearable compared to previews issues. In the end it's a good read to pass the time while in the john.

5th place-Green lantern corps # 5

Peter J. Tomassi has done it again! He's given us yet another book that we slightly care for, but jokes aside this book feels like its just… there. Other than the fact that we get the keepers back story (which happens to play a part in the continuity of the upcoming major GL story)

This book was entertaining, and ironically it takes a bit of willpower to power though this read.

4th place-Daredevil # 8

This issue marks the end of a special two-part crossover story involving Daredevil, Spiderman and Black Cat.

The main plot involves Black Cat getting framed over something she ironically didn't steal, and the only one that would even give her the time of day to solve the dilemma is Spiderman, but as we all know the web head has many friends and the most dangerous man in the world just happens to be his only hope of clearing black Cats name. But to my surprise, this issue Mark Waid just happened to make this little shindig into something he could use on his continuity in order to make Daredevil more legit than what he already is. Overall, this issue made up in story quality what it lacked in pacing.

3rd Place-Red hood and the Outlaws # 5

There's really not much to say about this other than HOLY CRAP! I can't believe they just pulled it off, we actually get to witness the moment where Jason Todd finds his true purpose and the transition that took place in order to cause said statement on this very issue!

And we also discover a secret that might just turn Starfire into one of the most powerful beings the DCnU has ever witnessed!

All and all this book is a must read.

2nd place-Superior # 7 (of 7)

In this line of business there will always be a few times where you catch a book on its final issue and you regret not reading it to begin with. This series is one of them!

The main premise of the book is technically the gritty uncensored side brand version of Captain Marvel, I had the privilege to actually catch up on the mini in order to read this issue and it was worth it, and everything you expect from a Superman-like hero is shown here and then some.  It's shazam done right, and I encourage, no wait… I URGE anyone and everyone to pick this up and give it a legit shot! It's THAT good!!

1st place-Batman # 5

I only got one thing to say about this… WOW! Looks like someone has been hitting Grant Morrison's secret stash. But whatever Snyder is smoking on must be some good ass shhh. Anyways, this issue reminds me of something I learned in English 1302 and it's a certain style of writing where the writer writes exactly what's on his mind, and keeps going non stop until he gets to the main point even if the writer repeats himself obsessively in the process. (You don't see that everyday) This book and to be honest, all Bat books since the relaunch have shown a more personal side of Bruce they shown him in a light where he's NOT this unstoppable hero who's got a plan to counter absolutely everything. They make him...Vulnerable for a change as if the man is not untouchable. I guess what I'm implying here is that when you've done as much to the bat as those before Snyder have done over the decades you realize that it is but a matter of time before the DC brass decides to alter his persona.

In the end this book took the cake, and twisted it and turned it upside down, inside out, then twisted it again… well you get the point, pick it up you WON'T regret it.

These were the books that made trip balls for the week of January 18, 2012.
