Kick Ass kicked my ass

First off let me say I am huge comic reader, but never read kick ass. I never liked Mark Millar much, he always struck me as a ass. I never met the man that is just the feeling I got from his interviews. So needless to say Kick Ass wasn’t on my must see list, but it should be on yours

The film is set (has much as a film can be) in the real world, it begins with introducing us to Dave Lizewski. Played by Aaron Johnson who for the first 5 minutes is very unlikable. And then as if a wand is waved becomes not just likable but lovable. I can even pin point the moment it happens, I don’t want to spoil anything but it involves his teacher.  You see for the first 5 minutes I felt like, the film was going to talk down to me. You know what I mean like in Anti Trust when Ryan Philippe says “I am such a geek”, when he should have said “any one who cast me as a geek should be fired”. You see what this film did right from the beginning wasn’t make me feel sorry for Dave, it made me relate to him in a real way. The same way I related to Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed, that’s right I went there comparing Kick Ass with Departed. After getting to know Dave a bit he asks a question, why as no one ever tried being a super hero? I won’t go into the plot anymore because you know the plot, we all do, what I want to talk about is the people Dave meets as Kick Ass. Each actor in this movie lives there character, not a single performance was bad.

This brings me to the man who gets his own paragraph Nicolas Cage, now I know your mad at Nic right now. Who isn’t after the shit fest money grab he has been on for the last 3 or so years. I know people who won’t see this movie because of Nic Cage, after Ghost Rider I don’t blame them. But I swear to you this movie will make you love Nic Cage again, this is Nic at his best. I am not talking Natural Treasure Nic Cage, I am talking Matchstick Men and Leaving Las Vegas Nic Cage. Nic plays Damon Macready a father with issues, he also plays Big Daddy. There the same guy but he plays them so different think Bale in Batman, but no screaming. I honestly feel Nic did this one for the material not the paycheck that means a lot right now considering his IRS problems.

The star of this movie isn’t Aaron or Nic oh no, they may get top billing and more screen time but the star of the film is Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl. Big Daddy’s 12 or 13 year old daughter, she is so bad ass so cool and perfect. It honestly makes me wish they remade Star Wars Episode 1 with her playing Anakin, I don’t care if Darth Vader wasn’t a girl. Those movies had lots of bigger continuity fuck ups, I am serious she is the most bad ass character you will see on film this year. Screw Whiplash and anyone else you can think of. This girl is it, forget the weapon training and the fighting she says cunt. Can you get more bad ass than a 12 year old girl calling men cunts? I cannot wait for part 2 simply to see more of her, she should be spun off into her own series. She is that good. Christopher Mintz-Plasse AKA McLovin makes his screen debut here, I know he was in other movies. But he was playing Mclovin in all those, this is the first time that I have seen at least. Were he plays a different character, he isn’t given much to do. His role is really a setup for things to come. But this is his best most laid back performance to date, he is another reason part 2 needs to get green lit fast.

Now I have to talk about Matthew Vaughn a man who has made 2 of my top 10 favorite films of all time. Stardust and Kick Ass now I know Mark Millar wrote the source material, and Jane Goldman helped bring the screen play to life.  But Matthew gave this world life, he chose actors to fit every part like a glove so many I could not name them all. Without making this review way to long, He also did something no film as done to me in over 5 years. It made me emotional, I can name countless times on film were some one died or got hurt. And I thought that sucked or I wish they didn’t do that, but in this film I found myself worried. Worried that my new favorite characters would die or be hurt, Matthew knew he would make us feel that way and played on it. At the height of being worried Kick Ass says in mid voice over, well I don’t want to spoil it, let’s just say he references American Beauty.

I could go on I could talk about so many other things I loved about this movie, but the only other thing I will say is go see this movie. Please for love of good movies go see this, I promise you will like it.
