Our Idiot Brother Review

I have a confession my brother is an idiot, but I still like this one better.

I have never been a huge Paul Rudd fan, but something happened with I Love You Man. The best way to explain it would be to tell you I have a bro crush on Mr. Rudd, I have had it since I Love You Man. I also had one on Jason Segel till he made Gulliver’s Travels, now I hate him. He’s like the girl you used to like but found out she touched your much younger cousin’s smeckle, so now every time you see her she kinda looks brain damaged.

The movie bucks a recent trend I have been complaining about lately movies being unrealistic, while some of the films plot may stretch the boundaries of that line it never quite crosses it. The film stars Rudd as the title character the idiot brother Ned, who has just been released from prison for selling pot. It’s here the film begins to fall apart right from the beginning, see from the first 5 minutes in the movie feels like director Jesse Peretz  and writers Evgenia Peretz and David Schisgall saw Everybody’s Fine and thought let’s make a comedy. Well that’s not a horrible idea I mean that film tried selling itself as a comedy so why not make a real one like it? Well because it’s not easy, it takes someone with a real eye to tell the tale with just the right amount of heart. It’s like cooking a great chef can go crazy in the kitchen cook with heart and soul but a baker must be a scientist, this film was made by cooks not bakers.

It delivers the tastes it tries for just too much at the wrong time and not enough at the others, the film is uneven at best I want to call it a failure but it made me laugh. I think it had to with the great cast Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer as Ned’s sisters Miranda, Natalie and Liz. Each of which is so unlike the others it’s laughable, I mean their sisters right. Steve Coogan needs a special shout out for being certified scene stealer, it does not matter who he shares a screen with when he is on, he is on.

I know you must be getting mad with me do I like the film or not? No I do not like the movie or the direction but I love the cast and the acting, but is this a film you and your special someone or group of friends should go lay down your 50 bucks for? No its not, look at it this way 2 tickets is 19 dollars popcorn and drinks using the average theater price for popcorn and drinks and your looking 34 dollars on the low end for a movie that is poorly written and directed. Wait for the Blu-ray and even then rent it don’t buy it you will much happier that way.
